Fascinating Study Examines the Remote Work Landscape
The transformation to remote work has forever changed how businesses approach the workday and employee flexibility. In a new study from Ooma, company age emerges as the strongest factor in remote work adoption patterns. The team based their analysis on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 Annual Business Survey, which revealed a complex landscape that featured newer companies leading in adoption rates while established businesses had the biggest impact on the number of remote workers employed. Companies under two years old demonstrated the most support for remote work, with 43.9% citing their ability to build operations around a flexible work model. This number declines with company age: • 41.8% for 2–3 years • 40.8% for 4–5 years • 40.4% for 6–10 years • 38.2% for 11–15 years • 35.6% for 16+ years old
The scale of the number of remote workers hired reflects a different reality, though. Legacy companies over 16 years old employ 38 million remote workers, which is a whopping 76.4% of the overall remote workforce. This demonstrates that size and resources can make up for lower adoption rates in terms of remote work impact. Barriers to remote work are consistent based on the company’s age. Job incompatibility is the most common reason companies don’t offer remote work across all age groups. The second leading reason was security concerns, which were a factor for more older businesses than younger businesses. This suggests that younger businesses are more comfortable with technology adoption and computer security.
Perhaps the most interesting statistic is the “no limiting factors” category. About 39.7% of the youngest companies stated there were no barriers to work-from-home adoption. This suggests that newer businesses are founded specifically around remote work or can more easily integrate remote solutions. Remote work possibilities continue to shape hiring practices, start-up innovation, and how we communicate on the job as we evolve toward increasingly flexible work solutions.
