Sniping is an art that combines unmatched precision, patience, and an ability to operate from concealed positions. These marksmen are celebrated for their extraordinary long-distance kills, often under extreme conditions. A recent study by the Sightmark team sheds light on the greatest sniper achievements, compiling data on shot distances, weapons, ammunition, and the snipers’ nationalities. Read more.
Topping the list is an astonishing 3,800-meter shot by Ukrainian sniper Viacheslav Kovalskyi during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in November 2023. This incredible distance—equivalent to 2.36 miles, longer than the Washington Mall—showcases the immense skill required. Using a Horizon’s Lord rifle paired with 12.7 x 114 mm HL wildcat ammunition, Kovalskyi’s achievement is nothing short of legendary.
Canada also claims its place in sniper history. A member of the elite Joint Task Force 2 set the second-longest record with a 3,540-meter shot during the Iraq War. This operation, aimed at neutralizing an ISIS fighter, highlights the tactical expertise of this secretive unit.
The third spot belongs to an Australian soldier who executed a 2,815-meter shot during the War in Afghanistan in 2012. Although their identity remains confidential, their accomplishment reflects the extensive training and precision demanded by such feats.
Other notable entries include snipers from the UK, South Africa, and the U.S., each contributing to a legacy of extraordinary marksmanship:
• Corporal of Horse Craig Harrison (UK): 2,475 meters
• Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock (US): 2,286 meters
• South African Special Forces Sniper: 2,125 meters
These remarkable records emphasize the blend of skill, advanced weaponry, and real-time calculations that define the art of sniping. As this study illustrates, these long-distance kills are testaments to the enduring excellence of snipers worldwide.
