Artificial intelligence, once confined to the realm of science fiction, is now a major force shaping our daily lives. A fascinating timeline created by the AIPRM team illustrates how AI has progressed from an ancient idea to an indispensable technology. While AI advancements may seem like a recent phenomenon, their origins can be traced back centuries. Ancient civilizations conceptualized early forms of automation, such as the Greek myth of Talos—a massive bronze automaton guarding Crete in 700 B.C. Meanwhile, Persian scholars devised programmable musical instruments, showcasing an early attempt at mechanical intelligence. Fast-forward to the foundations of modern AI, we encounter influential thinkers like Al-Khwarizmi, the Persian mathematician who pioneered algorithms in the 9th century. Aristotle’s logical reasoning theories later contributed to AI’s ability to process data and make decisions. The true transformation, however, came in the 20th century with breakthroughs from visionaries like Alan Turing and John McCarthy. Turing, widely regarded as the father of AI, developed a test in 1950 to measure a machine’s ability to mimic human intelligence. If a machine’s responses are indistinguishable from a human’s, it passes the Turing Test, a standard that still influences AI development today. In 1958, McCarthy coined the term “artificial intelligence” and created Lisp, the first AI programming language, paving the way for Python and JavaScript.
