Boating offers a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s not without risks. Recently, the team at SI Yachts released a study mapping the safest and most dangerous states for boating based on boating fatalities per registration since 2019.
According to the study, the ten safest states for boating include Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Mississippi. Leading the list is Minnesota, famously known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Despite its abundance of lakes and boating opportunities, Minnesota’s stringent boating laws have kept fatalities at a minimum, proving that strong safety regulations can significantly reduce boating deaths.
On the flip side, the ten most dangerous states for boating are Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, New Mexico, Vermont, Colorado, Hawaii, Alaska, and the District of Columbia. Washington, D.C., home to the Potomac River, tops this list as the deadliest boating location. The Potomac’s hazardous currents, combined with frequent alcohol use among boaters, have led to numerous tragic accidents. Alaska follows close behind, where unpredictable weather and freezing waters increase the risk of deadly incidents.
The study also identified common factors contributing to boating fatalities, with alcohol use, hazardous waters, operator inexperience, and weather conditions topping the list. The findings serve as a crucial reminder for boaters to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and prioritize awareness on the water. Whether boating in a high-risk or safer area, taking precautions can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
