It’s easy to imagine that every mattress brand you see when shopping is operated by an individual company, but NapLab’s new article reveals that these brands are consolidated under a few corporate umbrellas. Understanding these corporate ownership bubbles can help shoppers make better choices, identify brand overlap, and understand why pricing and marketing seem similar across different brands.
On the team’s graphic, we find a dominating force in the mattress industry: Somnigroup International. They used to be known as Tempur Sealy International, but continue to own the iconic brands Tempur-Pedic and Sealy. Tempur-Pedic is known for its memory foam, marketed as the most healthy option for good sleep posture. Meanwhile, Sealy is one of the oldest spring-mattress brands in the U.S. Somnigroup International also owns the luxury Stearns & Foster brand, the Sleepy’s brand, and the Mattress Firm retail store chain. Somnigroup International has power over both manufacturing and retail in the mattress market.
Another major corporation identified in the data is Serta Simmons Bedding LLC (SSB), a long-time industry leader with a portfolio that includes Serta, Simmons, Beautyrest, and Tuft & Needle. SSB has faced financial difficulties, but they remain an influential brand in the mainstream and hybrid mattress industries.
The direct-to-consumer space has consolidated companies too. The Ashley Global Retail company is known for furniture, but entered the mattress space when it bought the brands Nectar, DreamCloud, and Awara. The company 3Z Brands owns popular online mattress retail favorites like Brooklyn Bedding, Helix Sleep, Leesa, Bear, and Nolah.
