New Maps Label States by Amount of Time Worked
States come with different stereotypes and perceptions. A new map from Qualtrics unveils truths about how much residents work in each state. Do you think your state is full of worker bees or loungers? The map will help you compare neighboring states. The team calculated the percentage that the residents of each state spent working last year, then ranked them. They found that all the states landed somewhere between 16% and a little over 25%. A few states didn’t provide enough data to draw firm conclusions. The states are color-coded on the map, with green-tinted states working the most and pink-tinted states ranking the least amount of time. Average states are a shade of blue. The team was able to draw some interesting correlations based on their data. They found that Utah residents spent the most time at work, 25.17% of the year, and the state also has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Utah residents may be working longer hours because work is so plentiful. Perhaps Utah just has a strong work culture or is home to many individuals who are enthusiastic about their jobs. What’s clear is that lower wages can push people into working longer hours just to get by. Residents of Mississippi, Alabama, South Dakota, and West Virginia spent a lot of time working, but having some of the lowest wages in the industry could also impact these numbers. Alabama and Mississippi provide a lot of manufacturing jobs with high demand for long shifts exceeding 40 hours a week. We can also assume that a high cost of living would make residents work more to afford their rent and lifestyles. Colorado has a high cost of living and ranked number five on the list. States with a lot of decent part-time work also tended to have a lower percentage of time worked last year. For example, 29% of Connecticut’s workforce is part-time and residents there spent the least amount of time working last year.
