Florida leads with the most fish caught per person. With an amazing 8,000+ miles of coastline, yearlong warm waters, and diverse species, it’s no wonder it’s a fishing haven. In Florida, fishers find herrings, groupers, and seatrouts in the state’s variety of waters. Over 5 years, people caught 2.4 billion fish in Florida, amounting to 108 fish caught per the 22.4 million population. Florida’s fishing success can be boiled down to optimal fishing conditions, extensive fishing infrastructure, and a massive fishing tourism scene. The little state of Rhode Island came in second at an impressive 77 fish caught per person, proving that even small states can produce efficient fishing. The Ocean State has a long history of fishing tradition, leading to its concentrated 84.7 million fish caught among 1.1 million residents. The most popular fish in the state is the scup, comprising 28.2% of catches. This abundant species enjoys Rhode Island’s climate and exists in great numbers thanks to conservation management. We can see some interesting ecological patterns in different regions. For example, in Maine, the cold northern waters create the ideal Atlantic mackerel environment, representing a whopping 61.6% of total catches.
