Stroke Risk Factors and Prevention

The not-for-profit organization The Live-in Care Hub is dedicated to providing independent information and advice for elderly people and their families about living a better life in their later years. They advocate for care in the home, with professional live-in carers providing 24/7 care, as a better alternative to residential care homes. Live-in Care Hub research has shown that older people have significantly better physical health and mental well-being when they are cared for in their own home than when they live in a care home. They also research some of the most common conditions in older people and have recently researched data about Stroke and how it impacts people’s lives after suffering a stroke. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of stroke, and contributes to 54% of all strokes worldwide. However, The Live-in Care Hub have also highlighted relatively simple lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce the risk of having a stroke. A healthy diet is one of the main changes that older people can make in order to reduce the risk of stroke. Also, taking regular exercise and giving up smoking can all contribute to a lower risk of stroke in people over the age of 65. This infographic also looks at some of the common misunderstandings around stroke, such as the mistaken belief that they only happen to older people. Statistics show that, in fact, 25% of strokes happen to people under the age of 65. The infographic also highlights the mistaken belief that there is no need to seek medical attention if the symptoms disappear. The reason this is not true is because Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) – also known as “mini-strokes” – where symptoms may be limited and short-lived, are actually warning signs of a potential future stroke and do require immediate medical attention.
