The Most Loveable Bullies: America’s Favorite Dog Breed

There are hundreds of dog breeds in existence, and many dog-lovers have preferences for their favorite. One of the most popular breeds in the United States is the bully breed, which is one of over 50 terrier-type dogs. This breed includes beloved dogs such as the staffordshire terrier, bull terrier, and bullmastiffs. Dogs with a significant mix of other bully breeds are referred to as “pitbulls”. Together with pitbulls, bully breeds make up 20% of the US dog population, which is over 18 million dogs. They are also the most popular dog in 21 states, including Alaska, Utah, and South Carolina.

Many people love bully breeds because of their good-natured temperament. The American bully has one of the highest rankings, with a score of 100%. It is followed by the bull terrier (90.9%), the dogo argentino (90.9%), and the cane corso (88.7%).  Some of these bully breeds are extremely new- for example, cane corsos were only registered in 2010 in Italy. Other bully breeds are much older; for example, the Boston terrier was registered in the United States in 1893. One of the most recent registrations of a bully breed was the dogo argentino, which was registered in 2020 in Córdoba.

The most popular dog breed right now is the French bulldog, based off of the American Kennel Club’s number of registrations in the last year. This ranking was monumental, because it ended the Labrador Retriever’s 31 year reign in this top spot. Bulldogs, rottweilers, Doberman pinschers, boxers, Cane Corsos, and Great Danes, also all cracked the top 20 ranking of number of registrations. Bully breeds are even all the hype when considering the search results for dog breeds. American pit bull terriers are widely searched, along with American bullies, bulldogs, and mastiffs. Clearly, there is much to love about these types of dogs!
