Internet access helps many people stay connected with the modern world whether they use a phone, PC, or tablet to get access. The team at Ooma highlighted this issue with a map showing us the U.S. cities with the highest and lowest numbers of Internet-connected households. We can see the percentage of households with an Internet connection in their data.
These were the cities with the most Internet-connected households:
- Boulder, Colorado: 95.5%
- San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California: 95.4%
- Santa Rosa-Petaluma, California: 95.4%
- Ogden-Clearfield, Utah: 95.3%
- San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, California: 94.9%
- Washington, D.C.-Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, and parts of Maryland and West Virginia in the metro area: 94.9%
- Manchester-Nashua, New Hampshire: 94.8%
- Anchorage, Alaska: 94.8%
- San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, California: 94.7%
- Bremerton-Silverdale-Port Orchard, Washington, and Barnstable Town, Massachusetts (tie): 94.7%
These were the cities with the lowest number of Internet-connected households:
- Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas: 17%
- College Station-Bryan, Texas: 14.5%
- Charleston, West Virginia: 14.2%
- Mobile, Alabama: 14%
- Springfield, Missouri: 13.9%
- Longview, Texas: 13.9%
- Waco, Texas: 13.8%
- Corpus Christi, Texas: 13.7%
- Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana: 13.6%
- Canton-Massillon, Ohio, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama (tie): 13.5%
Boulder, Colorado, is the most connected city with more people getting access through phones than broadband. Connectivity access must be strong there because only around 5% of the population uses satellite Internet access, which is often the option where people can’t access broadband or 5G
In Brownsville-Harlington, Texas, only 17% of the households have an Internet connection, which is only one fifth of the homes. There are several Texas cities on the list, and it’s likely that the lack of connections isn’t a choice by the residents there but an issue of access. There are a lot of rural areas in Texas where broadband and 5G access may be limited.
