Why Consumers Trust UGC More Than Ads

Think shoppers still trust glossy ads? The data says otherwise—real voices now set the bar for credibility.

As of 2025, 60% of consumers say user-generated content (UGC) feels more authentic than any other kind of marketing. They also rank it 9.8 × more effective than influencer posts. That jump in trust drives action: 72 % are more likely to follow a brand that shares UGC, and 61 % admit it pushes them to like, comment, or buy.

The shift isn’t new, but it keeps accelerating. Back in 2023, 90 % of consumers already preferred seeing UGC—up five points year over year. By 2024, confidence in peer-made content spiked worldwide. India tops the list at 93 % trust, while the U.S. (65 %), Canada (64 %), France (62 %), the U.K. (57 %), Germany (56 %), and Australia (59 %) all show solid majorities leaning the same way.

Demographics reinforce the trend. Over 77 % of Millennials and 74 % of Gen Z call UGC more trustworthy and valuable than anything brands, retailers, or influencers produce. Format matters too: 76 % of shoppers place the most faith in short UGC videos, far ahead of images (13 %), text (7 %), or audio (3 %). Nearly half consider brands that publish customer-shot video more dependable than those that don’t.

Why the performance gap? People spot polished messaging a mile away. A quick unboxing clip or candid review filmed in a bedroom feels risk-free, relatable, and—most importantly—believable. That authenticity feeds back into brand perception: 86 % of consumers trust companies that highlight UGC over influencer content, and they’re 2.4 × more likely to label those brands “authentic.”

The infographic below stacks all these numbers side by side so you can see exactly where trust is growing fastest, which age groups move first, and which formats trigger the biggest credibility lift. Use it to benchmark your current content mix, pitch a UGC-first strategy, or hunt low-effort wins—like reposting customer videos or featuring fan photos in your next campaign. Real stories are beating paid spin every day; the stats just confirm what shoppers already feel.
